09:10 – 09:30 AMThe Price of Insecurity: The Economic Impact of Violent Crime on U.S. Cities – And What Can Be Done to Prevent It
Katie Hill, Executive Director, University of Chicago Crime Lab – Moderator
Jeff Shapack, Founder & CEO, Shapack Partners
Jens Ludwig, Bergman Service Professor, University of Chicago; Pritzker Director, University of Chicago’s Crime Lab
Gun violence is a quintessentially American problem. Our murder rates are unheard of in any other wealthy nation in the world, and violence is concentrated in our cities– the economic engines of our country. Each homicide reduces a city’s population by 70 people as both residents and businesses flee from the violence, further weakening the fabric of urban communities and reducing the tax base. Failure to control this crisis traps our cities in an unrelenting cycle of poverty and violence, eroding the very foundation of our economic strength and threatening to undermine our nation’s position in the global economy.

But the Crime Lab is not simply hoping for a safer America—they have a data-driven plan. Their research demonstrates that strategic investments in policing management, community violence intervention, and cognitive behavioral therapy programs can significantly reduce violent crime. This event will feature a conversation between Jens Ludwig, world-renowned economist and UChicago Harris School professor, and Jeff Shapack, prominent Chicago business leader. The discussion will be facilitated by Roseanna Ander, Executive Director of the Crime Lab. Solving gun violence isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s an economic necessity.

What happens when families avoid the hard conversations — and how learning to face adaptive challenges can protect more than wealth.

When families choose silence over discomfort, they often believe they’re preserving harmony—but in truth, they may be placing the very foundation of their legacy at risk. Beneath the surface of unspoken assumptions lie critical issues: succession, identity, entitlement, fairness, and purpose. These are not technical problems with clear-cut solutions—they are adaptive challenges that require honest dialogue, vulnerability, courage and ultimately behavioral change.
